Local chapter of SNIA gets green light

By Stuart Finlayson

The American arm of the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) has announced the official formation of the Australian and New Zealand chapter of the Association.

The SNIA is a not-for-profit organisation made up of more than 300 companies and individuals worldwide spanning virtually the entire storage industry. Its members share a common goal - to set the pace of the industry by ensuring that storage networks become efficient, complete and trusted solutions across the IT community. To this end, the SNIA is committed to delivering standards, education and services that will propel open storage networking solutions into the broader market.

It is hoped that now a chapter is to be formed in region, knowledge and growth of storage networking amongst users will accelerate.

Approval from the full Board of SNIA USA was obtained on 28 July 2003, permitting the local steering committee to register the not-for-profit organisation and begin fee collection from potential members.

A local steering committee commenced over 12 months ago to guide the formation process, with vendor, user, reseller and education membership now open. Fully paid up members will elect a Board mid-October with a launch event planned in early November.

The Interim Board consists of representatives from EMC (Mark Heers), HP (Andrew Manners), Imation (Peter Glover) and Markom Marketing (Rob Stirling).

Members of the newly formed chapter have declined to comment further on the news for now until a press statement is issued in two weeks which will outline founding membership names, SNIA USA statement and setting local objectives and plans.

More information on the SNIA can be found on its web site - www.snia.org.
