Local development awards StorageTek

Developing applications in Australia has led to StorageTek receiving a Certificate of Recognition from the Federal government.

Senator Richard Alston, the Minister for Communications, Technology and the Arts presented StorageTek with the award in Canberra yesterday saying that the award was in recognition of StorageTek's contribution to research and development into information and communications technology (ICT) in Australia.

Mr Alston paid particular attention to the $10 million that StorageTek brings into the Australian economy. "Through its long-term investments in R&D and expertise, StorageTek has created centres of excellence in Australia in software development;professional services and technical support," said Mr Alston. "Through these activities, and its strong regional focus, StorageTek Australia has been an important contributor to creating a sustainable; export oriented IT services industry in Australia."

"StorageTek Australia's regional role is underpinned by a significant andongoing investment in the Australian services business," said PhilipBelcher the managing director for StorageTek Australia in a statement. "StorageTek Australia is constantly developing new services to help customers throughout the Asia South Pacific region manage the complexity and costs of storage."

The Canberra based Australian Software Research and Development Centre (ASRDC) was set up in 1988 and has been pivotal in developing specialist storage applications for their Asia Pacific market. Its most significant development was the migration of StorageTek's Virtual Storage manager (VSM) application to Fujitsu's mainframe operating system. A spokesperson for StorageTek said this was particularly important as via Australia StorageTek was able to break into the Japanese market, which is a large user of the Fujitsu mainframe system. He added that the laboratory had also developed specialist applications for the Chinese market and offers solutions for this part of the world.

ASRDC also developed StorageTek's first ever standalone software product, the Extended High Performance Data Mover, which has since been adopted by 130 sites around the world. In the next few weeks ASRDC will also launch a Web interface for this application.
