NetApp to provide storage support for ESRI

Geographic information system software developer ESRI is to become an authorised vendor of Network Appliance storage systems.

Testing has proven that Network Appliance (NetApp) storage solutions are compatible with ESRI software. Centralised data management, fast access to both current and archived geographic information systems (GIS) data and flexible implementation of disaster recovery configurations are some of the expected benefits for ESRI customers using ArcGIS and ArcSDE. Unified NAS and SAN capability, high data availability and the ability to increase capacity that is instantly usable, allegedly without any downtime, are some of the claimed pluses of NetApp's GIS solution.

NetApp's systems are scalable up to 48TB per system with the FAS 960c and support leading Oracle and SQL server databases. There are a variety of storage solutions that will ideally accommodate ESRI data at remote sites, while the NetApp NearStore System is well suited to large ESRI deployments that need to cut down on administrative costs when backing up or restoring data. The combination of SnapMirror and NearStore allows ESRI data from filers at several locations to be copied on one central site for backup and recovery purposes.

"NetApp addresses enterprise storage solutions and data management issues for our GIS customers," said Jack Dangermond the president of ESRI.
