Intrepid goes where McData has gone before

McData has extended its Intrepid line of director-class Fibre Channel switches, this time with a 140-port model that more than doubles the capabilities of its predecessors.

The Intrepid 6140 displaces the 64-port 6064 model as the largest in the McData line, although the company said it would be completely backward compatible with the other switches in the family. The company said that the 6064 would continue to be suites to "smaller SAN fabrics", while the 6140 would support larger SANs and FICON segments. Using a proprietary technology called Intermix, the Intrepid switches can support both Fibre Channel and FICON traffic simultaneously.

The 6140 model can be configured to provide 64 to 140 ports in four-port increments. The device takes up to 12 rack units, meaning that three of them can fit in a standard 19 inch rack.

McData claimed that it had a 91 per cent market share in director class switches, where it competes with Brocade and InRange. The 6140 is available now through Hitachi Data Systems, IBM and other distributors, while OEM partners EMC and Hewlett-Packard are still performing qualification testing on the product, according to McData.
