Pioneer shifts gear

Pioneer has built on its release of a 10X DVD-ROM drive in October, which was the first such drive to read at that speed, with the first DVD autochanger.

The 100-disc DRM-1004V40 Autochanger with up to 470GB of storage is available through Pioneer's distributor, SCSI Corporation.

Aimed at the video, multimedia, library and archiving markets and other mass storage sites, the autochanger provides 20X CD-ROM and 2.6X DVD-ROM speed.

It also features a disc load time of less than three seconds and can be configured with up to four DVD-ROM drives to allow several users to access data simultaneously.

"The DRM-1004V40 allows users to invest in a technology that can implement a current CD-ROM application, and then migrate the application to DVD at any time using the same autochanger," said Simon Bartlett, national sales manager for multimedia products at Pioneer.

The DVD-AO4S drive offers transfer rates of 10X DVD-ROM (13.5 Mbps) and 40X for CD-ROM (6 Mbps). The $599 drive also has improved seek and access times of 90ms and 100ms for DVD-ROM and 70ms and 80ms for CD-ROM. The drive is compatible with all mainstream CD and DVD formats. The DVD-A04S will be available in ATAPI/IDE interface versions with a 10X SCSI version to come.

Pioneer has also released the DVR-S201 DVD Recorder, aimed at industrial DVD authoring and long term data archiving.

This second generation DVD-R external SCSI-2 drive enables users to record discs to be played back in DVD-ROM and DVD-Video Player drives.

The DVR-S201 writes and reads both 4.7GB and 3.95GB media. Writing at 1X and reading at 2X speeds, a 4.7GB disc can be written in approximately one hour.

The write-once medium can store any type of digital information such as video, audio, images, multimedia titles and data files.

According to Pioneer, with its increased capacity, it becomes an ideal medium for data intensive storage in vertical markets such as medical imaging and document management.

The drive is priced at $9000 and comes bundled with Prassi DVD Rep Premastering Software and two 4.7GB blank discs.
