Sony has released a CD-R writable drive with 32X read ability, in the hope that business PC users will be able to use the one drive for both reading and writing.

The CRX140 from Sony records at 8X, enabling a CD to be written in under nine minutes, and features a 32X playback.

Extra features include a large 4MB buffer which ensures low incidence of buffer under-runs, custom laser ensuring accurate burning and extended durability, according to the company.

The drives are available in both IDE and SCSI versions, with kits including Adaptec's Easy CD Creator CD mastering and Direct CD drag-n-drop file copy software.

Pricing starts at $695 for the internal IDE drive and $795 for the internal SCSI version.

"Many people are now starting to use CD-R and CD-RW discs rather than large floppy disks, and we have designed the drives to work that way," said Gordon Kerr, Sony Australia's product manager for data storage.
