Iomega looks to optical with ZipCD

Peripheral hardware specialist Iomega has entered the optical storage market with its first CD-RW drive, called ZipCD.

The internal E-IDE 4X record, 4X write and 24X read drive will be the first in Iomega's line of optical products.

It offers 200,000 hours mean time before failure, a 125 millisecond random access time and a transfer rate of up to 3.6Mbps.

Iomega is better known for its Zip, Jaz and Clik! Drives, which have offered rewritable storage solutions with media capacity under the 650MB CD limit.

The ZipCD drive will be priced at $499 and is compatible with Windows 95, 98 and NT.

The drives will be bundled with Adaptec DirectCD, Adaptec Easy CD Creator, Avery Media Software, Iomega QuikSync, and a cut-down version of Adobe Photoshop.
