Quantum snaps up NAS market

Expanding its position in the Network Attached Storage market, Quantum has released the Snap Server 1000.

Weighing 1.5 kilos, the product is based on a single Quantum hard drive rather than two as in previous Snap Server releases, and offers 10GB of storage capacity.

Aimed at small workgroups, Snap Server 1000 is an extension of the company's product family that already includes the Snap Server 20GB and 40GB.

Its small form factor (half the physical size of previous models) makes it suitable for use as a portable file server between locations.

"The Snap Server 1000 provides users with an affordable and justifiable entry point for shared network storage, while its portability makes sharing files between various remote office locations easier than ever," said David Rawcliffe, marketing director for Quantum Asia Pacific.

Snap Sever 2.1 software, which is featured with the Snap Server 1000, has Macintosh TCP/IP support, and has the ability to replicate server settings. This allows network administrators to quickly customise a new Snap Server and complete installation by importing the settings of an existing Snap Server on the network.

The unit is available through Lan1 and will be priced at $999. The 20GB and 40GB models sell for $1995 and $3520 respectively.
