Compaq takes HighGround on ENSA

By Hannah Birtles

Compaq is increasing its push into the storage area network market by extending the offerings in its Enterprise Network Storage Architecture (ENSA). In addition, it has announced a US$20 million investment in Highground Systems, a US-based provider of storage resource management software.

According to Stephen Bovis, marketing manager for storage for Compaq, the new solutions increase data availability, reduce operational costs, and speed application development and deployment time.

"The Internet has changed how the world does business, making instant access to online information critical to meet customer demands and help them remain competitive," he said.

The partnership with Highground will fill an important gap in Compaq's ENSA strategy and will enable the management of SANs in a heterogeneous environment, according to Mr Bovis.

Compaq's new StorageWorks Enterprise Volume Manager software provides point-in-time copies of data and parallel processing for system backup and data migration.

The host-based software virtually eliminates backup windows by allowing non-disruptive backup/recovery operations. The software is priced at $9500.
