Lava 4.4 adds Web capability to doc system

Lava Systems Australia has released Lava 4.4, the latest version of its compound document management application. Lava 4.4 integrates with any Web browser to manage Internet or intranet Web pages in the same manner as any other document.

Lava 4.4 indexes Web pages as a dynamic document with an active link to Web pages back on the Internet. Users have easy access to the latest versions of linked Web pages and can view static copies of cached Web pages within Lava's multi-format viewer.

Lava's compound document management system incorporates document management, imaging and workflow in one application. It provides access to document formats from word processing and email to video clips and images, and supports image manipulation, rotation, tilting, zooming and scrolling in multiple page management.

"More and more organisations are using the World Wide Web to store and disseminate corporate information. Intranets are also being embraced as a way of publishing and storing internal documents," said Lava Systems country manager, Trish McBride.

"Lava 4.4 enables organisations to integrate HTML documents into their existing document management systems," she said.

Lava 4.4 provides simultaneous viewing of all document and data types, including word processing documents, Web pages, faxes, spreadsheets, email, video clips and engineering drawings, and supports image manipulation, rotation, tilting, zooming and scrolling in multiple page management. It also integrates an organisation's legacy applications using the Lava/Enabler software.

Lava 4.4 can also map the flow of documents around an organisation, enabling automatic routing of documents to designated users and departments.

It supports remote access through dial-up connections and most network operating systems, including Novell NetWare, most versions of UNIX, and SQL database engines including Oracle and Sybase. Lava 4.4 also runs on Windows 3.1, Windows 95 or Windows NT.

Highlights of the application also feature fax management, alerting the appropriate person of the arrival of a fax; a keyword search facility for all documents, regardless of storage format or document type; enhanced installation and administration facilities, simplifying implementation and reducing set-up costs; and broader platform support, including Microsoft Office 95

Lava 4.4 costs $20,000 for the server software and includes the licence for the first 10 'seats'. Additional seats are priced at $1000 each.
