Victoria Explores South African Hi-Tech Markets

December 4, 2007: The Victorian minister for Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Theo Theophanous has released a report encouraging hi-tech companies to explore trade and investment opportunities in South Africa.

While the first reaction may be to wonder what has gotten into the Victorian minister, further exploration reveals that South Africa has the potential for rewarding investment according to Theophanous.

“Now is an ideal time to take a serious look at South Africa’s ICT trade and investment opportunities for Victoria’s growing ICT industry” said Theophanous.

According to Theophanous South Africa remains the economic powerhouse of Africa after almost 15 years of democratic rule and there is massive potential for Victorian ICT companies to capitalise on this market opportunity.

The Brumby Government’s “Emerging ICT Market Strategy: South Africa” report is aiming to give Victoria’s ICT companies market knowledge to keep a competitive edge in the global market.

“Our ICT sector is well-placed to take advantage of such an enterprising country. Victoria’s ICT players have carved lucrative niches, producing high-quality, exportable products which the South African market is showing a strong need for.” said Theophanous.

Should the report drum up the interest it is aiming to it would be a major boon for those involved as in this past year Victorian ICT companies exported more then $1 billion worth of ICT equipment and services and account for approximately 25 per cent of the $23 billion national ICT industry.
