Sun wants 0 Data Centres by 2015

January 11, 2008: Sun Microsystems have set the ambitious target of zero data centres for their Sun IT division by the year 2015, with the elimination process beginning as soon as possible.

In an official blog posting, Sun data center architect Brian Cinque has lain the company’s plans to eliminate all data centres by 2015 on the table. While the first thoughts may be of how Sun IT has lost the plot with the abandonment of the trusty data centre, it’s actually not so simple and has the company bound for more Software As A Service (SaaS) orientated solutions.

“As SunIT reduces data centers due to higher utilization functionality, there will be a point proven by metrics, that SunIT can only become so efficient. At that point SunIT must progress from a service oriented architecture to more of a software as a service.” Said Cinque.

Sun IT currently uses server virtualisation products like Solaris Zones/LDOMS that Cinque believes will enable the abandonment of data centres altogether by 2015.

"I am implying that these solutions are enabling technologies to allow SunIT to achieve our goal of 0 data centers by 2015." He said.

The move follows on from Sun IT’s already ambitious targets to reduce data floor space and power consumption in half by 2013, the altered goal would gives them just a further two years to eliminate data centres altogether.
