Veritas extends support to Quantum DLT

Storage management software provider Veritas has increased support of its NetBackup solution to include Quantum's DLT8000 tape system.

The NetBackup enterprise data protection solution provides centralised control from a single management interface.

The solution's key features include dynamic tape drive sharing, snapshot backup, server free backup and disaster recovery support.

This new support provides backwards compatibility with previous generations of DLTtape drives, and signals Veritas' move to develop enterprise tape storage solutions for the Windows NT and Unix markets. DLTtape has emerged as the defacto standard for backup, archiving, disaster recovery and network storage for mid-range systems.

Veritas is moving to support other heterogeneous environments that include the Linux platform. As part of the company's newly announced Linux Strategy and Roadmap, Veritas will port its online storage manager Volume Manager, File System, Cluster Server and NetBackup server to Linux throughout 2000.

This support and Veritas' recently unveiled open-source strategy is being driven by the growth of the platform. IDC has predicted that Linux servers will account for 24 per cent of global server appliance revenue by 2003.

Veritas has also formed a strategic partnership with Red Hat to accelerate the availability of enterprise-class Linux storage environment.

The Veritas NetBackup Linux client, currently shipping with Red Hat Linux 6.1 Deluxe, performs data protection for Red Hat Linux, SuSE Linux and Caldera OpenLinux servers or workstations. The companies will also cooperate in marketing programs to promote their mutual solutions.

As part of its open source strategy, Veritas' product releases for Linux will continue to be in a binary format. Any additional technology developed specifically for the Linux kernel will be open source.
