September 4, 2008: A new freeware tool has been released to help organise and manage the diverse range of video content on the average desktop.
The software is available to download from TMPG, a company that makes a popular freeware video encoder and sells a range of video editing and authoring tools.
“As digital video becomes more popular, it is more important than ever for users to be able to organize their growing video libraries” said CEO Kimi Matsuki.
“We created TMPGEnc KARMA for precisely that reason, and are making it available for free to assist anyone that has digital video.”
KARMA can scan a specified video folder and add any supported video clips to its video library list. Videos can be sorted by name, creation date, number of times played, and more. Users can also rate videos by creating custom keyword descriptions or by color-coding them for even more sorting options.
The software includes a video player that can playback in full screen mode or in the background while you are organizing the collection. Multiple preview screens are able to playback simultaneously and the viewing area can be customized and resized to the user’s preferences.
You can even preview a video without taking the time out to watch it by creating a “digital contact sheet” of thumbnail frames using the included TMPGEnc TileShot CREATOR. It is also possible to create an animated .gif file which cycles through a set number of frames from the video. These thumbnail images can be used as previews on Web sites or for archiving purposes.
