Super Talent Intros Capacious and Cost-Effective SSDs

By Greg McNevin

October 1, 2008: While their performance and ruggedness have caught the industry’s attention, solid state disks (SSDs) are still struggling to make real inroads into the marketplace due to their often prohibitively high cost. However, this may soon change with the release of affordable SSDs by flash storage and DRAM memory specialist Super Talent.

The company claims to have shattered SSD affordability barriers with the launch of a pair of new SATA-II SSDs in its MasterDrive range.

Super Talent says that the new 64GB MasterDrive LX will retail for US$179 (AU$222), while the 128GB version is expected to retail for under US$300 (AU$373) – far cheaper than any other SSD currently on the market.

The MasterDrive LX is built with NAND flash and uses a SATA-II 3Gbps interface, making it interchangeable with typical magnetic hard disk drives. Super Talent says that the drives support sequential read and write speeds of up to 100 MB/sec, and up to 40 MB/sec respectively, and come with integrated ECC, wear levelling and bad bit management functions to both reliability and lifespan.

“The MasterDrive LX is our most cost-effective SSD yet. However, we’ve made no compromises in quality and reliability,” said Super Talent Director of Marketing, Joe James.

Both models will begin shipping this week.
