Quantum and Riverbed Settle Patent Dispute

Quantum and Riverbed Settle Patent Dispute

By Greg McNevin

October 6, 2008: Quantum and Riverbed have announced that they have resolved their de-duplication patent dispute, with both companies dropping their lawsuits against each other.

The two said they have reached an undisclosed settlement, however, some digging has uncovered a report Quantum filed with the SEC detailing that Riverbed will pay Quantum US$11 (AU$14.24) million to settle all outstanding claims.

Riverbed uses the innovative de-duplication technology in its WAN acceleration devices and primary disk storage. Quantum acquired the technology during its acquisition of ADIC in 2006, and ADIC had previously acquired it from Rocksoft.

Quantum licenses the technology to EMC and Data Domain, and was in royalty talks with Riverbed for eight months in 2007. This was unresolved, so Quantum launched a patent infringement case against Riverbed in September 2007. Riverbed responded with a case of its own against Quantum.
