Samsung Primes New Enterprise SSDs

November 28 2008: With its new 250GB solid state disks (SSDs) rolling out, Samsung has announced new enterprise SSDs targeted at high-performance applications requiring low-power consumption and high IOPS rates.

The company is now mass producing 25 and 50GB SSDs for server applications such as video on demand, web serving and on-line transaction processing.

Samsung says that the enterprise grade single-level-cell (SLC) SSDs have about twice the random write performance of its standard 32GB and 64GB SLC SSDs, and deliver the “greenest” storage for data centres as they use just 1.25 watts of power in active mode and 0.3 watts in idle mode.

The company claims that these SSDs consume less than 25 percent of the power of a 2.5-inch 15K SAS HDD, and provide the lowest possible heat load on a data centre air conditioning system.

“The Samsung SSDs give IT managers the best in high-performance, high-endurance storage for servers, with markedly less energy consumption,” says Gerd Schauss, Director memory marketing, Samsung Semiconductor Europe. “Now being considered by virtually all major PC OEMs, the proven technology of enterprise SSDs provides a compelling combination of price, performance and longevity for many medium-sized businesses as well as large corporations.”
