Businesses Still Support Sustainability Despite Economic Slowdown
December 16, 2008: Like the recent declarations of those at the UN climate negotiations in Poznan, Poland, an IDC study has found continued support for sustainability initiatives despite the economic crisis.
Several of IDC's Industry Insights companies - a series of industry-specific research and advisory firms - have collaborated on a survey exploring how businesses are approaching sustainability, and found that after surveying upwards of 350 businesses in North America, 51 percent are still looking to enhance their applications.
With the world’s attention riveted on climate change, pressure to reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency is increasing, particularly, according to IDC, public pressure for companies to incorporate "green" initiatives and sustainability as a core of their business strategy.
According to the findings of the study, for businesses, there is a recognition that corporations have a role to play in sustainability, understanding and growing their business opportunities and consumers' competitive choices, and evaluating the different costs and profits.
The survey also found that 47 percent of companies will buy new applications to implement green initiatives, while 39 percent will contract with external consulting organizations to assist in implementation.
“Across the sectors we've studied, we see significant increases in the emphasis that sustainability projects have received,” said Jill Feblowitz, practice director at Energy Insights. “We're pleased to report that sustainability influencers are ploughing ahead with executive support and that spells good news for software and service providers.”
Like many participants at the recent UN climate talks, it looks like businesses are finally recognising that the most equitable, practical and economic way forward is the green way.
