NSW Government Job Site Hacked

NSW Government Job Site Hacked

By Greg McNevin

January 27, 2009: A NSW government job website was hacked late last week, with fake public service jobs posted and jobseekers spammed.

The Government’s jobs.nsw.gov.au, which is run by the Department of Commerce, is currently offline as a precautionary measure after the fake advertisement was discovered. However, the situation could be worse, as the site’s database of users have reportedly been spammed with the advert, indicating that the hack could have gone deeper.

Users received spam mail advising them of commission-based job opportunities, with the usual link for more information.

The department is currently being tight lipped about whether or not any personal information has been compromised, and has so far refused to release any details of the attack outside of a warning notice posted on the website.

The Department is advising that anyone who has been contacted in regards to a non-existant job vacancy to not to reply and delete the email immediately.

It is not known when it will be back online.
