Tandberg Data introduces Viking FS-1610U NAS

February 17, 2009: A new network-attached storage device from Tandberg promises a versatile data storage, backup and recovery solution that allows file-sharing in heterogeneous environments.

The Viking FS-1610U NAS device offers new options: support for both SATA and SAS hard disks (adding SAS), plus a number of additional RAID configurations taking the full specifications to RAID levels 0,1,3,5,6,10,30,50,60, as well as JBOD. The FS-1610U uses Serial-ATA/SAS connectivity to support up to 16 hard disk drives (HDD), or more by adding extra RAID enclosures.

“As rapid file restores become more critical and backup windows continue to shrink, IT departments need storage solutions that enable users to share files in heterogeneous environments,” said Raymond Kang, Vice-President of Sales and Marketing for APAC, Tandberg Data. “The Tandberg Viking FS-1610U NAS addresses this requirement, while adding storage versatility to a broad spectrum of file management and data protection capabilities.”

The device’s enhanced system design increases data availability. The new SAS disk drives suit data-intensive applications, while the SATA drives are optimised for low-cost bulk storage. The Viking FS-1610U NAS has an optimised 3U form factor for rack environments.

The FS-1610U allows flexible storage expansion, speedy file access and convenient file-sharing. It provides high data availability and easy data management, supported by rapid recovery.

Fast installation and configuration are facilitated using Remote Desktop Management. The FS-1610U offers quick-restore functionality via DVD Recovery image and allows users to customise different RAID levels for protection of the operating system partitions.

Multiple snapshots using Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service ensure point-in-time data recovery, while hot-swap SAS 3Gb/SATA II HDD and RAID hardware provide optimal storage and data availability. When the Tandberg Viking FS-1610U NAS needs to be restored, the Recovery DVD image brings it back to a factory default within minutes.

The device also provides an iSCSI-SAN solution (as an iSCSI target) for remote servers and clients using Windows Unified Data Storage Server 2003. The Tandberg Viking FS-1610U NAS offers connectivity support for external tape units or tape autoloaders via its Ultra320 SCSI controller, which allows direct connection to a tape device, autoloader or library.

“This unique feature set makes it the perfect solution to enhance data protection and offline staging for restoration or archiving,” says Kang. “The Tandberg Viking FS-1610U NAS can be implemented as a tiered storage device, a backup server, or a centralised file-sharing device.”

The device features a 3U Form-Factor, powered by an Intel E5405 Quad-Core Xeon 2.00GHz, 12MB Cache (1333 MHzFSB) chip. It has 2GB of RAM, expandable to 16GB, 667/533 MHz DDR2. It can support up to 16 Hot-swappable S-ATA or SAS HDD (Max 1.0TB per HDD, or more by adding additional RAID enclosures. There are two Hot Swap PSUs.
