AT&T Releases SMB Archiving Service

By Greg McNevin

October 19, 2007: AT&T has made a move into SMB data storage, offering small firms a new remote data storage service for as little as US$10 per month.

Called AT&T Remote VaultDM, the company launched the new service this week saying it has tailored it’s enterprise-level service to meet the needs of the country’s 5 million plus small businesses, including small offices and home offices (SOHOs).

Provided they have a broadband connection available, the service enables small businesses to remotely access, copy and store data from PCs or laptops to an AT&T Internet Data Center, where it is centrally managed and securely protected.

The company claims the service is fully automated and secure, with backups scheduled to automatically occur daily or as needed, and backup data easily restorable to customer PCs, through the Remote Vault application.

“Many home-based businesses and other small businesses understand the importance of backing up files and data; yet, with the hassle and time involved in manual methods, they don’t back up their data as often as they should,” said John Regan, vice president of Small Business Marketing for AT&T.

“AT&T Remote Vault enables small businesses to easily and affordably take advantage of data backup and recovery offerings.”

US$10 a month buys SMBs and SOHOs five gigabytes of storage space, with costs rising US$2 per gigabyte as the archive grows.

It is not currently known if or when AT&T will be offering the service outside of the US.
