WD Dishes Out Highest Hard Drive Density

October 23, 2007: Hard Drive producer, Western Digital (WD) has announced it has achieved 520 Gb/inch squared areal density, in what it claims is the world’s highest hard drive density.

As well as being difficult to say five times fast, the highest hard drive density gives WD the potential to create hard drives up to 3 Terabytes, which the company anticipates will be available by 2010 based on current rates of storage growth.

The technology was demonstrated at the Perpendicular Magnetic Recording Conference in Tokyo and was first shown at the WD Magnetic Head Operation labs in California. "The milestone was realized using our current-technology MgO reader, illustrating the extendibility of PMR-TuMR head technology generations into the future" Hossein Moghadam, chief technology officer for WD.

The current highest available density is 200 GB/inch squared which feature in drives of 250 GB in size or more.

"WD was the first hard drive manufacturer to ship in volume the 250 GB capacity point in the 2.5-inch form factor," Moghadam continued "Our technology investments position WD with our customers as a leading choice for the highest, cutting-edge capacities. Our top priority will be to remain keenly focused on providing the highest quality and reliability, which customers have come to expect from WD after years of relying on our products."
