Bitmicro Releases 416GB SSD Drive

By Greg McNevin

October 29, 2007: Bitmicro Networks has released a new solid state drive (SSD) this week, announcing a new addition to its intelligent flash IDE/ATA, SCSI, and Fibre Channel SSD line up, the 416GB E-Disk Altima.

The E2A3 Serial ATA (SATA) SSD is a 2.5-inch, flash based solid state SATA drive that the company claims is capable of sustained transfer rates of up to 100MB/sec and withstanding shock and vibration up to 1,500 G and 16.5 Gs respectively.

The company says this makes it perfect for mobile computing applications, particularly as the drive is a drop-in replacement for many notebooks and rugged PCs.

Given that the initial wave of SSD notebook drives coming onto the market are in the 16, 32 and 64GB range at the top end, the 416GB Altima looks to be suited to top end applications such as military, research and aerospace at the moment.

No pricing accompanied the release announcement.
