Toshiba Beefs Up Notebook Capacity
August 22, 2007: Toshiba has nosed ahead in notebook hard drive capacity, announcing the world’s first 320GB 2.5-inch hard drive.
The 5,400 RPM drive heads a new line of magnetic drives from the company, and uses both 120GB-per-platter and 160GB-per-platter designs depending on model.
Toshiba has also expanded its HDD line to include higher-performing 7,200 RPM notebook drives with capacities up to 200GB.
All drives support Serial ATA connectivity and its 3.0 Gbps data transfer rate, and include free-fall sensor options which automatically park the heads when a fall is detected, preventing platter damage and safeguarding information.
Toshiba claims that these new drives provide the fastest native transfer rates achieved in a notebook to date, at least when it comes to traditional magnetic storage devices.
