Imation Expands Odyssey

By Greg McNevin

August 30, 2007: Imation has kicked up the storage capacity of its Odyssey line of removable hard disk cartridges, with the medium now offering up to 160GB of rugged storage for SMBs.

The company says the drives were developed to make typical magnetic hard drives into a more robust and flexible storage choice. The solution includes an external USB 2.0 docking station and one swappable hard disk cartridge that contains a 2.5-inch SATA hard drive.

The docking station is backwards compatible with all Odyssey cartridges, giving it a capacity range of 40, 80, 120 and now 160GB, plus further expansion capabilities in the future.

According to Imation’s Dr. Subodh Kulkarni, vice president of global commercial business, R&D and manufacturing, SMBs are now dealing with the same data storage problems that enterprises have been struggling with for years. He claims that the Odyssey solution enables SMBs to deftly handle their data retention and compliance obligations.

Greg Schulz, the founder and a senior analyst from The StorageIO Group echoes this challenge to SMBs, claiming that they “need greater access to cost-effective, reliable and flexible storage solutions in order to meet their ever-expanding data protection requirements including backup and archive.”

Schulz adds that Imation’s Odyssey “is a great step in providing SMBs, as well as managed service providers, with more flexibility in how and where they protect data in a timely, cost-effective manner.”
