EMC Boosts Documentum with X-Hive XML

July 23, 2007: Despite talk of scaling back acquisitions in favour of focusing on its core business, EMC has announced that it has purchased X-Hive, a Dutch CML specialist to its ranks.

X-Hive is the latest in a long list of acquisitions, with EMC consuming 34 companies in under six years. The firm brings with it a range of XML tools that EMC is eager to add to its Documentum content management, enabling not only a new repository that combines CML indexing and XML queries but full text and transformation to EMC’s infrastructure according to eweek.com.

The company mainly services firms in the aerospace and manufacturing sectors where it has carved out a lucrative niche for itself. Through integration with Documentum, X-Hive’s technology will enable EMC to base its offering on XML, essentially future proofing its offering while enabling it to take advantage dynamic content in new ways. Simultaneously, X-Hive’s tech will move out of its niche and into large scale use.

“If EMC is successful in seamlessly bridging its historical market position in document management into next-generation XML content management, it will be very well-positioned to benefit from the explosive growth of XML content," said Burton Group analyst Peter O'Kelly.

EMC says all of X-Hive’s staff will be retained, while new employees will be hired straight away. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
