Sony Unveils Razor-Thin Flexible Display

May 29, 2007: The race is on to develop paper-thin flexible electronic displays, and less than a fortnight after LG’s announcement of the first colour electronic paper, Sony has announced a groundbreaking flexible display.

On Friday Sony released footage of its new invention, a .3mm thick display that bends easily and displays full colour images. Displays are getting thinner all the time, however, Sony’s technology is a major breakthrough not just because it is razor-thin, but because it’s flexibility opens up a world of display possibilities previously only seen in science fiction.

While it has not indicated any products the display could be used in as yet, Sony spokesman Chisato Kitsukawa told the Associated Press that "In the future, it could get wrapped around a lamppost or a person's wrist, even worn as clothing."

"Perhaps it can be put up like wallpaper," added Kitsukawa.

Sony said it is currently exploring ways to increase the size of the 2.5 inch display shown off in the video, and while others have their own forms of electronic paper in the works, the company told AP that its organic electroluminescent display is more suitable for video as it delivers better quality colour images.
