Australian Start-Up Faces US Court

April 10, 2007: Australian DVD disc manufacturer Regency Media has been sued by US based MPEG LA for breach of its MPEG-2 Patent Portfolio License.

With the complaint filed in the US District Court, MPEG LA says Regency has repeatedly breached contractual obligations by failing to report on the manufacture and sale of MPEG-2 Royalty products.

MPEG LA is seeking monetary damages for royalties owed as well as an injunctive relief prohibiting Regency from manufacturing and selling MPEG-2 Royalty Products.

MPEG LA describes its MPEG-2 Standard as the core technology that underlies the creation, transmission, storage and display of digitalised moving images and sound tracks – the basis of DVDs. The MPEG-2 standard is a formatting requirement of the DVD-Video Standard.

MPEG LA works with technology licenses to allow users to acquire worldwide patent rights relevant to a technology standard or platform. MPED LA works on behalf of its customers to obtain a single transaction instead of negotiating separate licenses.
