Silicon Image Keeps Data Faithful

January 9th, 2007: Silicon Image has just released its latest SteelVine storage processor and in doing so has claimed a first in storage security with its automatic drive locking technology.

The company says its SteelVine SiI5733 is the first storage processor to promise content security by locking the drive to the host automatically. If the external drive is removed from the original host, it is inaccessible until re-connected to the same machine.

This could prove particularly handy for road warriors who need to store company data on an external drive. If it goes missing for whatever reason, its data will remain secure. Silicon Image says that a unique hidden password is burned into each storage processor, eliminating the need to remember yet another one.

Aside from enhanced security, the SteelVine also features drive cascading for dynamic capacity expansion, RAID 0, RAID 1 and two multi-RAID modes, SAFE33 and SAFE50, without requiring any software, drivers or particular knowledge.

The new processors are expected to be generally available in March 2007.
