Revamp Fails to Boost Microsoft’s Search Offering

January 19th, 2007: Surprising no one, Google has come out on top in the latest comScore analysis of search services, grabbing 47.3 percent of the US search engine market in December 2006.

ComScore conducts monthly appraisals of the search industry, and has been watching Google, Yahoo! and Microsoft with a keen eye, noting that despite trumpeting its renovated Windows Live Search service Microsoft is still struggling in the search stakes.

The analysts at comScore claim that Google dominates almost half the US market with 47.3 percent, Yahoo! rides in next with a respectable, but significantly lower 28.5 percent compared to Google. Microsoft on the other hand, has lost ground again to end up at 10.5 percent in December.

Ask Network holds was next in line with a meager 5.4 percent and Time Warner rounded out the top five with 4.9 percent.

Search is a tough game, the fact that Yahoo! has managed to hang on to its market share is an achievement in itself while Microsoft’s loss goes to show that a lick of paint and some new features won’t necessarily translate to greater search hits.
