Dell Tackles E-Waste Across the Country

Month Date, 2006: As the UN summit on global e-waste wraps up in Nairobi this week, Dell has announced it has recovered almost 100 tonnes of PC waste ready for the recycling bin, across Australia and New Zealand.

The Dell initiative capped off the year in Perth this week where residents delivered 14 tonnes of unwanted computer equipment for recycling. By working in conjunction with Murdoch University and WA’s Department of Environment and Conservation, Dell asked residents to drop off any related computer equipment, regardless of brand name, for collection.

WA Environment Minister, Mark McGowan said his government was gearing up to introduce legislation to State Parliament to further harness the opportunities for recycling e-waste. “Western Australians lag well behind the national average in recycling. However, as this event has demonstrated, people are very keen to recycle when given the opportunity,” he said.

Through collection events in Sydney, Brisbane, Wellington, Melbourne and now Perth, Dells says they has collected up to 100 tonnes of waste while also raising the awareness of PC recycling. Dell says the equipment recovered has generally reached the end of its useful life, with a good portion of the computer gathered dating back to the 1990’s and earlier.

Next up, Dell has announced it plans to soon offer free recycling of all Dell branded computers.
