Government Agencies Still Chasing the E-Government Utopia

December 5, 2006: A survey of CIO / Director level representatives of all three tiers of government finds inter-agency collaboration is still a high priority for 2007 alongside e-government solutions and the need to improve real-time notification processes for citizens.

The survey results come from Government Technology World 2007 where 200 CIO / Director level employees of government agencies were interviewed by Terrapinn on their priorities and key drivers for ICT programs.

When asked about the top issues government agencies were facing on a daily basis, respondents listed IT system integration – maintaining security and reliability, as the number one challenge.

It is clear e-government will again be on the agenda for 2007 with 32 percent listing the importance of e-government in their organisations as a high priority where they are actively implementing a solution. While 14 percent said e-government was not a priority at all, another 41 percent said they were investigating e-government solutions while the remaining 13 percent claimed to be piloting an e-government program.

The survey results indicate that a good majority of agencies are looking to integrate services and collaborate with other agencies while also improving real-time notification processes for citizens. Terrapin says the results suggest the public sector is after a platform for providing collaborative networking, information and assessment of alternative solutions.

When asked specifically about vendor relationships, 29 percent of agencies said they were looking to advance interagency collaboration with Microsoft. Another 18 percent listed IBM, 14 percent listed HP and 12 percent listed Sun.
