Backing Up the Fragments: It’s A Waste Of Time

December 11: While vendors are working hard on advancements to speed up the backup process, Diskeeper says that without an automatic defrag, disk fragmentation will continue to frustrate IT administrators who have better things to do then wait around for the process to finish.

So Diskeeper Corporation have done something about it. They’ve combined defragmentation with their storage performance technology to deliver Diskeeper 2007. It’s a product made for business productivity and one that celebrates the vendor’s 25 years in the industry.

According to Diskeeper, as backup involves file access, the fragmentation that occurs can have a time consuming impact on the backup procedure. Through the release of their own internal testing results, Diskeeper has found that the time taken to back up data from a standard hard drive to a backup device can be decreased with a defrag job completed prior to the process.

The Diskeeper 2007 product is designed to minimise the time required for file-based data backup through the addition of automatic defrag processes. Available in Australia through PixelIT, the product works to improve backup data transfer rates by combining directory consolidation with I-FAAST (Intelligent File Access Acceleration Sequencing Technology.)

Through I-FAAST, the product works to optimise file placement on the drive while also including the real-time defrag technology that directly monitors the CPU and makes the most of idle time for backup and storage optimisation.

Graeme Taylor managing director for PixelIT, the Australian partner for Diskeeper, told IDM that the new software will not only improve productivity for Australian businesses but also for the everyday home PC user. “Because of its longevity Diskeeper has proven its worth in the market. With this product, defrag happen in real-time and on the fly,” he says. “It’s a major technology change and I’d say competitors will be jumping on this technology in the future.”

It’s been an 8 year relationship for PixelIT and Diskeeper, a relationship that fairs well with Diskeeper’s recently celebrated quarter of a century in the industry. In celebration, the vendor calculated its monopoly over the market, claiming to produce over 95 percent of the network defragmenters used in the corporate market.
