Survey Says: Make Backups Easier

November 7th, 2006: A new survey by the German Software Initiative Deutschland (SID) and NovaStor has found that the loss of company data carries with it enormous economic risks.

Canvassing German data specialists during a nationwide SID survey in September 2006, the survey found that 92% support the claim that data loss and economic risk are intimately intertwined. However, it also found that archival software needs to better match company needs.

76% of those questioned identified implementing automated processes as an additional advantage in order to save costs. While 80% considered it important that data protection software is able to adapt to new IT technologies so as to avoid expensive system conversions.

To prevent the loss of critical data, the specialists recommend a backup solution that can be operated easily by all employees using the rationale that with a user-friendly system employees are more likely to actually carry out backups.

64% of the experts surveyed identified online data protection as the future of backup processes as this approach saves companies from large investments in storage hardware, not to mention time spent implementing and managing it. Online protection also provides peace of mind in the event of a fire or accident according to those surveyed.

“The majority of managers are very aware of the severe economic consequences a loss of data can lead to,” said Stefan Utzinger, Head of Data Protection at SID and Executive Vice President Marketing & Technology at NovaStor. “However, they still fail to backup their data professionally. Software Initiative Deutschland is especially focussed on removing the barriers among SMBs. Products are already available which enable non-IT specialists to backup data quickly and easily.”
