HP and SAP Become Study Buddies

November 9th, 2006: HP has announced that it is teaming up with SAP to research the flexibility, efficiency and cost-effectiveness of IT systems for businesses of all sizes.

Both HP Labs and SAP Research centres will work together to fuse their respective technologies (HP’s Adaptive infrastructure and SAP’s Enterprsie service-orientated architecture) and search for better ways in which to use an organisation’s IT infrastructure strategically, instead of gearing everything run at maximum throttle around the clock.

The two say that they are aiming to develop a model for “choreographing” IT systems so that hardware and software continually adapt to the varying daily workloads. They intend to do this by combining automation, virtualisation and policy-based technology to create flexible, adaptable and cost-effective systems to bring SME’s the same kind of sophisticated technology enjoyed by large enterprises.

“This research agreement enhances our longstanding relationship with SAP by leveraging new elements of HP’s Adaptive Infrastructure architecture with SAP’s evolving product and service offerings for Enterprise SOA,” said Dick Lampman, HP senior vice president, research, and director, HP Labs. “The collaboration will help create a future generation of highly agile and adaptable solutions for customers.”

HP and SAP say that the agreement is one of many between them regarding new initiatives, as they are also exploring topics such as SOA semantics, business process analytics and asset tracking based on RFID technologies.

The global research will initially include HP Labs teams in the United Kingdom and the United States, as well as SAP Research in Germany, Northern Ireland and Australia.
