Verbatim Gets Tough On Portable Security

September 7th, 2006: Verbatim has expanded its line of “Store ‘n’ Go” USB flash drives with a new range of devices designed with security and compliance in mind.

The company says that the new Store ‘n’ Go Corporate Secure drives feature mandatory safeguards such as hardware-based data encryption (via the Advanced Encryption System) and anti-tamper password entry protection. According to Verbatim, this makes them ideal for government agencies, enterprises and any organisation involved in medical, legal, research or financial fields where data confidentiality is paramount.

There are already other products on the market that offer advanced security measures such as password protection and encryption. Verbatim’s solution, however, is much more rigid as using the drives security features are mandatory, not optional.

The drive makes use of the Secure Hash Algorithm (SHA-1) for password protection. This ensures that the raw form of the password is not stored in the drives memory and that it cannot be retrieved from either the device or the computer it was connected to. Further to this, if a brute force attempt is made to hack the password or encrypted data, the drive securely erases all data after ten failed login attempts.

Verbatim says that write speeds hover at 14MB/sec and read speeds max out at 23MB/sec. The new drives come in 1GB, 2GB and 4 GB flavours.
