New Media Storage System

New media storage system

July 3rd, 2006: DiskStream has announced the release of media management system, Capsa, which aims to make the transition from tape archiving to digital painless, claiming the long term savings outweigh the initial expense.

DiskStream will be releasing the first version of its Media Management System (MMS), Capsa, for storage and metadata archiving of video and audio files at the end of August, 2006. The system is aimed at small television stations and other organisations with large multimedia archives. DiskStream is confident Capsa will reduce the trauma of transition to digital, offering an easier option for upgrading archive systems for dramatically improved access to material.

Perhaps most appealing is the ability for users to simply feed their archive information such as Word, Access and Excel across to Capsa and have the files updated automatically as they are placed in the MMS. This should reduce the cost and time of video tape archiving by removing the need to shuttle through video tapes. Capsa offers a Google-like search option that can quickly restore files with a drag-and-drop function, preview the files in low resolution and desktop archiving.

Offering both nearline HDD-based storage (2,300 hours of MPEG-2 videos at 10mbps) and offline DVD based storage capacity (56 minutes MPEG-2 video at 10 mbps per video). DataStream alleges the return on investment occurs quickly as the costs associated with video archiving disappear once the move to digital is made.
