Red Hat Puts Application Server To Sleep

By Greg McNevin

June 5th, 2006: Confirming open source community expectations, Linux Distributor Red Hat has announced that it is halting further development of Red Hat Application Server.

The move comes in the wake of Red Hat’s acquisition of application server provider JBoss earlier this year, a U.S.$420 million deal that is yet to be finalised.

Red Hat says that it decided to discontinue Red Hat Application Server (RHAS) because the JBoss software is more advanced. It will be merging RHAS’s underlying technology with JBoss’ software.

“We are very impressed by the people at Jboss and the technical capabilities of that organisation,” chief executive Matthew Szulik told vnunet.com. “We think they are superior to the Red Hat Jonas implementation. What we would like to do is take the best from the Jonas implementation and make that available to the Jboss developer teams where that makes sense.”

Red Hat says that existing RHAS customers won’t be rushed to move over to JBoss and it will continue to support RHAS licences to the end of their contracts.
