NetApp And Symantec Boost SAN Management

May 19, 2006: NetApp says that it has increased its heterogeneous SAN management capabilities by reselling Symantec CommandCentral Storage software as part of its manageability software family.

NetApp will be co-branding the software which, it claims, will aid data centre management by helping enterprise customers gain better visibility into their multi-vendor storage environment.

The announcement comes hot on the heels of NetApp’s vigorous push into the high-end enterprise data centre where it is taking on EMC and HP. It also extends an already close relationship with Symantec that has seen tight integration between NetApp’s much heralded single architecture and Symantec’s storage resource management capabilities.

“Our large scale enterprise SAN customers view NetApp as a strategic vendor and want us to extend our breadth of solutions to better help them manage the complexity of their heterogeneous environments,” says Tom Georgens, executive vice president and general manager of Enterprise Storage Systems at Network Appliance. “Adding heterogeneous SAN (Storage Area Network) management capabilities to our NetApp Manageability Software family is a significant move, allowing us to enhance the value we already provide to data centre customers in multi-vendor environments.

“Last week NetApp challenged the industry with our intent to attain storage leadership in enterprise data centre environments—this announcement represents another milestone toward that goal.”

The co-branded NetApp / Symantec version of CommandCentral Storage software is expected to be available in late 2006.
