MySQL Gets Solid Engine

MySQL Gets Solid Engine

By Greg McNevin

April 18th, 2006: Open Source database developer MySQL has kicked competition with Oracle up a notch by joining forces with the high-end database company Solid Information Technology.

Solid will create an Open Source storage engine for MySQL Server, giving it support for high-transactional applications in telecommunications and finance.

The addition of SolidDB technology to MySQL, puts MySQL into the enterprise league and makes it a direct threat to Oracle, who recently increased pressure on MySQL by acquiring the prominent InnoDB database engine, and the embedded database specialist Sleepycat.

The acquisition makes sense for the two Finnish companies, who also share an office in Cupertino in the U.S. The partnership will see Solid make its first foray into the increasingly important Open Source arena, while through Solid’s customer base, MySQL will gain access to new markets in telecommunications and transaction processing.

MySQL is looking to showcase a prototype the SolidDB Storage Engine during the last week of April at its’ customer conference.
