IBM Adopts Exabyte Tape Drives

April 20th, 2006: Exabyte has announced that IBM has taken on its VXA-320 tape drives for use in its System p and System i servers.

Named the worlds top server vendor by IDC & Gartner 2Q05 Server Market Share Reports, IBM’s inclusion of VXA-320 drives in its servers is a boost for Exabyte, although the company sees it the other way around.

“VXA's third generation drive, the VXA-320, is now available across the IBM System p, System i and IBM eServer xSeries product lines, which now gives even more IBM customers the opportunity to benefit from advanced VXA Packet Technology,” says Tom Ward, president and CEO, Exabyte. “VXA is an important technology, and we are pleased to be working with IBM, a recognized global leader in technology standards, to deliver patented, high-value technology solutions to its clients worldwide.”

Exabyte’s VXA tapes use discreet digital data packets instead of traditional linear tracks for enhanced data reliability and store up to 320 Gb per cartridge with data transfer rates of up to 24 MB/sec. The company says that its VXA-320 delivers four times the data rate and more than four times the storage capacity of the current DDS platform (DAT 72).

The VXA-320 is available now for IBM System p and System i customers.
