SNIA Standards Gaining Momentum

April 21st, 2006: The Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) has announced significant momentum across its range of storage standards atStorage Networking Wold in San Diego, California.

SNIA says that the momentum is being fuelled by developments such as the Storage Management Forum’s (SMF), Storage Management Initiative-Specification (SMI-S), eXtensible Access Method (XAM), Internet Small Computer System Interface (iSCSI) Management API (iMA), Multipath Management API (MMA) and Disk Data Format (DDF).

“One of our primary goals at the SNIA is to enable the highest levels of interoperability possible to help advance storage networking, data management and the industry as a whole through the development of specifications and standards,” says Wayne Adams, Chairman of the Board of Directors for the SNIA. “The groundswell of support combined with the ongoing development we are seeing for all of these standards and specifications is a strong sign that the industry is moving toward higher levels of open interoperability between storage hardware and software.”

The association says that version 1.1 of the SMI-S was developed to standardise interoperable storage management technologies, and enables increased data protection, expanded multi-vendor storage support and reduced training costs through standards-based management.

The new version is currently on track to be submitted to the International Committee for Information Technology Standards (INCITS) for ratification as an ANSI standard.

SNIA has also announced that it is continuing the development of several other specifications aimed at enabling interoperable storage solutions.

The latest addition to the portfolio of specifications is XAM. Currently under development, XAM is intended to establish standard, interoperable interfaces to coordinate information metadata between applications and storage systems.
