SGI Releases InfiniteStorage

April 27th, 2006: Silicon Graphics Incorporated (SGI) has introduced its new InfiniteStorage 6700 system, promising sustained, real-time streaming data throughputs of up to 3 gigabytes per second for read and write.

Targeting the broadcast, science and government industries, the InfiniteStorage 6700 features 4Gbit Fibre Channel connectivity and will be replacing 2004’s broadcast and production system the RM660.

The system has already found its way into some high-profile operations. NASA’s Ames Research Centre in Mountain View, California added 600TB of storage capacity to its Columbia supercomputing system, while the film optical house Pacific Title & Art Studio purchased two SGI InfiniteStorage 6700 systems with 50TB storage to handle the 8 to 16Tb of data it generates each day through digital cinema mastering.
