NetApp To Offer Virtual Tape Library

NetApp To Offer Virtual Tape Library

February 3, 2006: Network Appliance (NetApp) will be rolling out its new virtual tape library (VLT) next week.

Based on technology it gained through the acquisition of Alacritus in April last year, NetApp’s NearStore VTL is expected to be launched next Tuesday in the US.

The release will bring NetApp into line with a host of other vendors, such as EMC and HP, who already offer virtual tape solutions like NearStore.

As reported on Byte and Switch, NetApp’s VTL is capable of up to 50 TBytes capacity, and supports up to 128 virtual libraries, 1,024 tape drives and 8,192 slots. This makes it just as big as solutions offered from IBM and EMC, so software will be what separates from the competition. It will be capable of emulating tape libraries from vendors such as Sun, Quantum, HP, IBM and ADIC.
