HP buys ApplQ to improve storage management

Sep 21, 2005: Hewlett Packard has agreed to buy ApplQ, which specialises in open storage area network management and storage resource management technologies, for the purpose of improving the management of servers and storage for enterprise customers.

HP believes that this acquisition will strengthen the organisation's ability to give customers a single integrated consoled that controls and better exploits their storage and server infrastructure.

Ann Livermore, the executive vice president of the Technology Solutions Group at HP believes the acquisition will create huge benefits.

"When combined, HP and ApplQ's technology can simplify the IT environment, lower technology costs and let customers put their information to work while integrating with HP's entire software business, including server and HP OpenView management software."

Ash Ashutosh, the executive vice president, chief technology officer and co-founder of ApplQ, added that the combination of HP and ApplQ is great news for the company, customers and partners.

"We share a common vision for storage area management, a commitment to open standards and a belief in the role that multi-vendor storage management software plays in creating an Adaptive Enterprise.

"With HP, ApplQ now has the resources it needs to realise the full potential of its technology and bring a broader set of products to the market."

However, some analysts fear that the deal could endanger the concept of standards-based storage resource management software.

This is because ApplQ was a great believer in the SMI-S management software standard for SRM, which was put forward by the Storage Networking Industry Association. Analysts think that other manufacturers now will abandon the standard because of HP's acquisition.

HP has also bought Peregrine Systems too. Its service management software will be integrated into the HP OpenView business unit with the aim of creating the industry's most comprehensive distributed enterprise management software solution.
