Palm and Microsoft team up for Treo

Sep 28, 2005: Palm used to be the dominating force in the handheld market, and whilst it's still popular with end users, overall it has fallen well behind other innovators such as Research In Motion with their popular Blackberry handheld. This is arguably due to a series of problems such as manufacturing issues, Palm's delayed embracing of mobile phone and PDA convergence and poor compatibility with corporate software such as Microsoft Outlook.

Well, those days are seemingly over now that Palm has announced a strategic alliance with Microsoft that will see Windows software on a new line of Treo Smartphones. This new Windows Mobile 5.0 equipped Smartphone is a CDMA-based phone that also takes advantage of the Verizon Wireless BroadbandAccess service in the USA.

"We've long believed that the future of personal computing is mobile computing, and our collaboration with Microsoft is a historic step in delivering that vision to a larger market" said Ed Colligan, president and chief executive officer of Palm.

"This is a landmark alliance that will help businesses remain on the cutting edge of competitiveness." said Bill Gates, chairman and chief software architect of Microsoft. "Demand for accessing information on mobile devices is soaring, and businesses want a low cost, scaleable solution."

Aside from long awaited compatibility with programs such as Microsoft Office, the new Treo Smartphone makes full use of Palm's software suite.
