Symantec provides storage boost for Linux

Aug 11, 2005: Linux users will soon have the opportunity to take advantage of advanced storage management systems to improve performance and simplify control, thanks to Symantec extending its range of products.

The 4.1 version of Veritas Storage Foundation, Veritas Storage Foundation for Oracle RAX, Veritas Storage Foundation Cluster File System, Veritas Storage Foundation for Databases, Veritas Volume Replicator and Veritas Cluster Server will all now be available for Linux.

Symantec expects that these systems will deliver enhanced performance, greater availability, simplified storage management and 64-bit support on Linux.

Aaron Huslage, the senior systems administrator at CNF services, a provider of global supply chain solutions for a wide range of manufacturing, industrial, retail and Government customers, is very pleased with this announcement.

"Symantec's storage management and high availability solutions on Linux ensure us the same levels of performance, capability, and production availability we've come to expect on UNIX, while giving us all the advantages of more choice and lower cost for Linux systems.

"With the Storage Foundation for Linux 4.1 release, we are able to transition to 64-bit computing with the confidence that these Linux workloads will meet the mission-critical standards of our data centre."

Rob Soderbery, the vice president of Symantec's storage and server management group, believes that Symantec has set a new standard for storage management and high availability in product-class Linux deployments.

"At the end of the day, Symantec gives users the confidence to trust their data to Linux by reducing the risks and removing the obstacles associated with deploying Linux across the enterprise."
