Encryption protection for lost tapes

Jul 14, 2005: Most organisations fear the ramification of personal data falling into the wrong hands in the event of a backup tape being lost or stolen, but they minds would be put at rest if they new this information was protected by encrypted technology.

BakBone Software promises that it has come to the rescue of security conscious IT managers following the release of its NetVault Encryption Application Plug-in Module.

BakBone claims that it allows users to simply add easy-to-use encryption functionality to their existing backup and recovery operations as a first line of securing mission-critical information.

It encrypts data at its source, such as the database, files server or desktop, to reduce vulnerabilities for networked storage. It also uses the CAST 128 encryption algorithm, which is considered in some quarters to adhere to the highest standard for encryption.

Bharat Kumar, the vice president of marketing at BakBone Software, said that the data encryption is becoming very important for companies seeking to conduct and maintain completely secure backups of their networked storage.

Charlie Fulks, the CEO of Credit Union Data Processing, explained why preserving financial data is a top corporate priority for an organisation such as his.

"Security is a huge area of focus for us as a trusted data solution provider to credit unions. We wanted to guarantee that no personal data for any of the credit union members would be vulnerable in the event that a backup tape were lost or stolen.

"So we've gone to great lengths to make our VPN bullet-proof and ensure that data is encrypted before it traverses the network. We've recently begun encrypting all of our backups to add yet another layer of security while reducing risks even further."

BakBone added that the Encryption APM for NetVault is application agnostic and seamlessly encrypts files, databases and applications. In addition, it ensures that data is protected as it travels across the network to the backup server.
