Growing confidence in shopping online

Apr 22, 2005: Australian Internet users are more confident about shopping online because they believe it is becoming safer to do so, according to recent independent research commissioned by eBay.

According to the report, 67 percent of users believe it to be safer and have fewer reservations about purchasing goods via the Internet.

This confidence is also reflected in the recent online shopping boom, which has seen the number of regular Internet users who shopped online increased by about 343,000 in the second half of 2004, taking the total number of regular online shoppers to nearly 4.2 million.

One of the beneficiaries of this boom is PayPal, which now has one million accounts in Australia.

PayPal's Australia managing director, Andrew Pipolo, said that Australians who buy and sell online are looking for a payment service that makes the process easy to manage, quick and secure.

"We have reached 1 million Australian accounts because of the ease, speed and security offered by PayPal to make it a very appealing payment option for both buyers and sellers.

"With PayPal, sellers can offer credit cards as a payment option without the need for a traditional merchant credit facility. PayPal also allows sellers to receive payments instantly, eliminating the wait for funds to clear through bank accounts and allowing them to ship the goods immediately."

PayPal also goes to great lengths to settle the minds of security conscious shoppers by never sharing personal financial information, such as a credit card number, with the seller.
