EMC overtakes HP as external storage leader

Mar 07, 2005: EMC has poured salt onto the wounds of Hewlett-Packard, following its recent run of bad luck, which includes losing its CEO recently, by overtaking it as the biggest seller in the world of external disk-based storage.

This has been discovered by the IDC, which carried out a survey that ended in December 2004.

EMC maintained its lead in the external disk storage systems market with 22.0% revenue share, followed by HP and IBM with 19.4% and 13.1% revenue share, respectively.

Among the top 5 suppliers, EMC and Dell posted the strongest year-over-year revenue growth during 4Q04, with 15.2% and 13.4% growth, respectively.

For the full year 2004, EMC took the number 1 position, previously held by HP, with 21.1% revenue share. HP and IBM followed with 18.7% and 12.6% share, respectively.

Howard Elias, EMC executive vice president, Corporate Marketing and Office of Technology, said: "EMC's market momentum in 2004 speaks to the investment we continue to make in developing and delivering industry-leading products, the strength of our execution, the soundness of our strategy and, most of all, it speaks to the commitment we have made innovating for customer success."

This is the first time that EMC has overtaken HP since HP bought Compaq in 2001.Some people are saying that the reason for EMC's success is because it pitched its investment in the mid-range.

Despite HP slipping down the rankings with external storage sales, it still maintains the lead in all storage sales.
